Welcome - I’m Celia

I create safe, unhurried spaces where people can be honest about work and life, and discover sustainable ways forward they can feel proud of – through perspective, partnerships and courageous conversations.

At the heart of everything I do is a belief that work should support life, not quietly drain it – and that meaningful change starts when people feel safe enough to open up about what’s really going on and how they feel.

Celia Newlands - Central Business Associates

Our Mission

I want to help create a world where curiosity, creativity and compassion shape how we work, live and relate to one another.

I do that by making space for people to slow down, think things through, work creatively, and find a way forward that feels right for them, for others, and for the world around them.

Perspective

Stepping back to see what’s really going on, and what actually matters next. Space to untangle complexity, notice patterns, and make clearer decisions without the noise, urgency, or overwhelm.

Partnership

Working alongside you, not over you. Thoughtful, judgement free support that respects your experience, your values, and your capacity, without hierarchy or pressure.

Sustainable Progress

Turning insight into steady, workable next steps. Grounded support that helps ideas become actions, decisions feel lighter, and progress happens at a pace that fits real life.

Why This Work Matters to Me

I’m deeply drawn to working with people who are making a real difference in the world – often quietly, thoughtfully, and without much fanfare.

Many of my clients are helping develop more effective leaders, strengthening cultural understanding, creating resilience, or working towards something that will outlast them. Leadership, equity, integrity, cultural advocacy, and care sit at the heart of what they do – and being able to support that work, in even the smallest ways, matters to me more than any title ever could.

The people I work best with usually know that something needs to change, even if they can’t yet see what that looks like. They value loyal, thoughtful support. They care about doing things well – and about the ripple effect their work has on others.

What I love most for my clients is seeing the moment when a problem that felt overwhelming begins to look more manageable, when perspective returns, and when trust – in themselves, and in the process – starts to rebuild.

I don’t take that trust lightly. I work hard to be authentic, steady, and genuinely in your corner – because my role only really works when you feel heard, understood, and supported.

Why I Work This Way

I’ve spent my working life noticing gaps – not just in systems and structures, but in how people are supported, listened to, and given space to think.

Across industries, roles, and business models, a few themes have always stuck with me:

  • perspective matters,
  • collaboration is powerful,
  • and sustainable work looks very different from performative success.

I care deeply about fairness, integrity, and the real-life experience people have inside the work they’re building – for themselves, their teams, and their clients. Those values have shaped every chapter of Central Business Associates.

The Journey to Here

I’m originally from Scotland, and in 2011, my husband and I moved to Wynnum in Brisbane’s Bayside with our (then) two young boys. I’d already been working as a business manager for small businesses, and I was keen to build community and connection in this new place.

That curiosity quickly turned into action. In 2013, after noticing a gap for parents who couldn’t attend traditional (breakfast/long lunch/evening) networking events, I created a weekday casual coffee‑morning for an existing networking group – one that still runs successfully today.

From there, ideas kept unfolding, as people turned up, and opened up.

In 2015, Central Business Associates opened a coworking and flexible workspace in Wynnum. Over the years, it evolved into a deeply community‑centred environment – supporting collaboration, shared learning, and more sustainable ways of working.

As the business grew and changed, so did my focus. I became increasingly drawn to the why behind the work: leadership, decision‑making, systems, burnout prevention, and how businesses can grow without losing their humanity (or their patience!).

Eventually, stepping away from managing physical workspaces allowed me to fully focus on what I do best – working alongside small business owners to untangle complexity, strengthen foundations, and bring perspective to how their business actually operates.

What I’m Particularly Good At

Like many people who work this way, I often assumed ‘everyone can do this.’ And then my clients were usually the ones who would help me see that they can’t, or that they don’t want to.

Some of the strengths people consistently work with me for include:

  • Seeing patterns, connections, and root causes others are too close to notice
  • Untangling complex or messy situations into something clearer and calmer
  • Holding space for honest, sometimes uncomfortable conversations without judgement
  • Translating big ideas into practical, sustainable next steps
  • Bridging strategy, operations, and the very human realities of energy, capacity, and values
  • Helping people slow down just enough to make better decisions that actually stick

I work best in partnership – alongside people who care about integrity, sustainability, and the experience they’re creating for others.

Skills, Knowledge & Ongoing Learning

I’ve always learned in response to real gaps – in my own experience, and in the challenges people bring into the room.

Rather than specialising narrowly, I’ve built a broad and integrated skill set that allows me to work across strategy, operations, leadership, and the very human realities of change.

My background and training include:

  • Leadership and management, with a strong emphasis on communication, emotional intelligence, and healthy workplace relationships
  • Strategic and operational planning, including risk management, project work, and continuous improvement
  • Change management, supporting both individuals and organisations through transition in sustainable ways
  • Small business systems, covering finance, operations, customer experience, and practical governance
  • Coaching, mentoring, and reflective practice, helping people think clearly rather than be told what to do
  • Foundational psychology and behavioural understanding, supporting honest conversation and meaningful change
  • Sustainability and work-life balance, with a focus on longevity over performance
  • Cultural competence and equity‑informed practice, grounded in learning around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and reconciliation

In 2024, I completed a Diploma of Leadership and Management, alongside earlier formal study in Strategic Management, Change Management, Coaching and Mentoring, Small Business Management, and Counselling‑informed practice.

I continue to learn as the work evolves – not to collect qualifications, but to ensure the spaces I hold are thoughtful, ethical, and genuinely useful.

For those who prefer a detailed list, my full professional background and qualifications are available on LinkedIn.

Sage Room Co op

Alongside my work through Central Business Associates, I’m a Co‑Director of Sage Room Ltd Co‑operative, launched in 2022.

Sage Room grew organically from years of working collaboratively with people who shared similar values – integrity, care, sustainability, and the belief that we do better work together.

The co‑operative offers collaborative contract work, workshops, mentoring, and online learning, while allowing each of us to remain independent in our own businesses. It’s a model that reflects how I believe work can be – connected, supportive, and values‑led.

We care deeply about the ripple effect of well‑supported small businesses – on families, communities, and local economies.
