Equity has been a foundational pillar in my life and my work

Equality vs Equity visual explanation

I just wasn’t aware it was there.

Equity is a value I’ve carried quietly for years – guiding how I built relationships, helping me create collaborative environments, and to show up for the people around me. But it’s only in the last few years that I’ve begun to understand just how deeply it has run through my life, and how much it connects almost everything I care about.

As I started paying closer attention to some situations where things just felt ‘off’, I began noticing a pattern.
Things I’ve lived through – moments that challenged me, stretched me, made me feel uncomfortable, or that motivated me to push past obstacles. My curiosity about what connected them helped me recognise the same roots of inequity in situations far outside of my own story. Different circumstances, different details… but the same familiar imbalance underneath.

And once you start seeing those similarities, it becomes impossible not to care.
Impossible not to want things to be better – not just for yourself, but for everyone.

“Do the best you can until you know better.
Then when you know better, do better.”
– Maya Angelou

This series is my way of trying to do better with what I now know.

It started off being one article where I tried to explain simply how I felt about it as a value in my life and work, but it got longer and longer, until I realised it was an ongoing work in progress, and decided to introduce it as a collection of perspectives and ideas.

I’m not here to lecture or convince anyone.
I’m not here to spark arguments or defend opinions.

I’m here to explore what equity really looks like when we zoom out – and when we then zoom all the way in.

To trace those connecting threads between personal experience and bigger systems.
To highlight the places where our lives overlap in ways we might not expect.
And to invite you into a way of understanding that is grounded in curiosity instead of confrontation.

If you’ve ever found yourself struggling to understand an issue that doesn’t affect your life directly…
If you’ve ever wanted to respond with more empathy, more perspective, or just more clarity…
If you’ve ever wished for a way to stay open-minded even when you don’t agree…

My hope is that these pieces help you find that.

I want to help you see the similarities I’ve learned to recognise – not to change your mind, but to open a door to seeing different perspectives. To ask questions instead of reacting in anger. To choose compassion and curiosity, even when it’s uncomfortable.

This is the first chapter of a longer conversation about equity, humanity, and the ways our stories connect.

I’m so glad you’re here.
Let’s begin.

(This piece is the introduction to a series on Equity – they will all be published under the Equity header on the blog page)
