I love coming across businesses that are built around real-life needs – ones that fit with my own strong value of flexibility—and Mel’s story is a perfect example of that.
We met through a business membership with Front Page SEO (who you can find amongst my trusted service providers on my Business Resources page), where we’re both learning better ways to show up online and share what we do. When I heard about how and why she started The Bower Tasmania, I felt it was a great example to share.
Like so many people, Mel needed a way to work flexibly. For her, it became a necessity when her little one arrived 16 weeks early and faced a tough start in life. A traditional 9-5 job just wasn’t going to cut it for Mel. Unfortunately, flexible work options still weren’t (and aren’t) as common as they should be—though that’s slowly starting to change.
So Mel created something that worked for her and her family. What started as a small shop in Cygnet, Tasmania, has grown into The Bower Tasmania – a colourful, creative business selling everything from quality footwear to fun and bold t-shirts and hoodies.

I share stories like Mel’s because I believe so many people want (and deserve) work that fits around life—not the other way around. It’s not always easy, but it is possible. And the more we keep talking about it, advocating for it, and supporting and hearing about businesses like Mel’s, the more realistic flexible (and fabulous!) work becomes for everyone.
